Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) is one of the largest international airports in India. It is located in Shamshabad, about 24 km south of Hyderabad. The airport opened its doors to the public on March 23, 2008, replacing the old Begumpet Airport.
The airport is named after Rajiv Gandhi, a former Prime Minister of India. Spread over an area of 5,500 acres, RGIA stands as the largest airport in India. It is owned & operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), a public-private consortium.

RGIA has an integrated passenger terminal and a cargo terminal. It also has two runways. They are equipped to handle many passengers and lots of cargo. In addition to these, the airport has aviation training facilities and a solar power plant. It also has two maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facilities. These features make RGIA a comprehensive aviation hub.
In December 2015, RGIA became the first airport in India to start domestic e-boarding. It extended this to international passengers in October 2020. This initiative has significantly enhanced passenger convenience, making travel smoother and more efficient.
The Airport has also earned global recognition for its services. It has been ranked in AirHelp’s list of top 10 airports in the world, a testament to its commitment to providing world-class services. Between April 2022 and March 2023, RGIA handled 21 million passengers & over 140,000 tonnes of cargo. This reflects its ability to manage high traffic.
The airport is a hub for many airlines, including Alliance Air (India), Amazon Air, Blue Dart Aviation, SpiceJet, and IndiGo. It is also a focus city for Air India.
